I remember I used to tell people in high school that I was Hawaiian because I was ashamed of being Asian. Being Hawaiian meant I was just exotic enough to stand out but just American enough to fit in. After having the incredible privilege of getting to know Corinn and Tim and capturing their wedding, I began hearing more of Tim’s story and his childhood embarrassment towards being Korean and now watching his embrace towards his heritage.
He spoke up about it. He was verbal with it. He shed tears regarding it.
I immediately felt seen. But I also felt inspired. Even though I no longer feel shame for being Asian, I was so good at playing “white” that I carried a lack of embrace in my Filipino culture.
When I met Corinn – Tim’s healing and redemptive journey began to make sense. It didn’t take long for me to see that Corinn carried an intense level of safety for Tim to become more of himself. Her tenacity for keeping the individual uniqueness even within their relationship was inspiring. Their relationship wasn’t a melting pot where you blend into becoming one person, but a safe haven where both become even more of themselves around each other. It required enough trust for them to celebrate – and even enhance – the personalities, ideologies, and even values that seemed so different from each other without viewing the other partners differences as a threat to their own. Corinn & Tim – thank you for becoming more and more of yourselves together and inspiring people like me along the way.
I forever have the deepest love for the two of you. 🫶🏽
